The league was initially played indoors in 1977 the year before i went to sb in the main lounge of oneill college but when i arrived in 78 and found out about it i thought it was nuts cause someone was going to checked thru the large plate glass windows. That said the original founder figured a way to get the league played in the g quad pit. Big problem was the cement walls but also the mainhole covers. My first year i got the maint people to put some asphalt around the two covers making sort of a ramp. Still way to many imjuries. My second year i pleaded with them to recess the covers which amazingly they did
My team. Gayblades. If the puck was moving at 20mph starting speed + 100mph added slapshot velocity equals 120mph resultant speed. Bobby had been measured skating at over 29mph without the puck, and 28mph with the puck. So taking a slapshot while moving at over 20mph was common for him. Goalies would therefore routinely face pucks from him coming at them at over 100mph because of the added velocity that his skating added to the puck momentum.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5906875144542272320.post-62088854956963281282023-12-28T14:29:37.484-06:002023-12-28T14:29:37.484-06:00https://drive.google.com/file/d/1f_Q4tFid8Vl67aFvv...https://drive.google.com/file/d/1f_Q4tFid8Vl67aFvvaZ98OA45y4S3YSH4g/view?usp=drivesdk

This is what he looks like today. It was indeed held in a 2.5’ deep black top “pit” seemingly intended for social gatherings in the center of the G Quad; a group of 4 three story high dormitory buildings which were all Co-Ed. These were 4 of 8 primarily lower class men dorms, with many triple occupancy rooms. There were many student run businesses in these two (H Quad) residence hall communities including coffee houses and pubs. These business were closed during games. Pit Hockey was the main event, a place to see and be seen. I can confirm it was not sanctioned by the university, which added to its allure. At the end of my college years the u over airy was desperately trying to find a way to prohibit this activity but it was organic, born of NY kids who craved action, grew up playing street hockey (girls and boys do in NYC) and were comfortable with risk. The pit was only a short distance from the on campus volunteer ambulance corp and yes, they kept an ambulance on the street directly outside the pit at every game. I will also say that 100-150 spectators was the minimum attendance. There were that many people standing around the pit jumping back from the wall with every close call) If your dorm room faced the pit, (at least 72 rooms did) you were probably hosting visitors while music blasted and crowds gathered on the lawns between the pit and the buildings. If you were smart, you fixed your class schedule spring term around pit hockey games because no one wanted to be in class at 3:30. The games were gritty, and tough but not brutal. The guys didn’t wear helmets. The student refs strictly enforced the rules d yea, slashing was a big NO NO. They wore hockey shin guards, hockey gloves and some wore hockey elbow pads. Some girls dressed for watching Pit hockey like it was a night out…a high visibility event. Pit hockey was serious business. But most importantly, it was uniquely Stony Brook, aka the Berkeley of the East, and we loved it. I know Jacques from his crazy blond hair that he sported, but seeing him with his head shaved would have thrown me off the trail.
