The Hockey Show - Episode Five

It's Thursday, so you know that The Hockey Show is back on the air with more craziness! We had a bunch of stuff to get through tonight, but it should be mentioned that October 11 would have seen the NHL season open with four games. Instead, there was no NHL hockey played, and I'm really starting to believe that there will be no hockey this season. Maybe even for the next two seasons. Heaven help the NHL if that's the case. Nothing will alienate the fans like an extended lockout over the splitting of billions of dollars.

Tonight's topics included:
  • The two Winnipeg Jets' players who have gone to Europe and played horribly. There's no real reason for Evander Kane and Ondrej Pavelec to be as terrible as they have been, but thankfully they haven't played like they have on MTS Center ice this season.
  • The University of Manitoba Bisons men's hockey team headed south for some cross-border hockey action. They dropped a 5-3 decision to the University of North Dakota, and haven't beaten UND since 1949! They followed that up with a much better effort against the Bemidji State University Beavers in a 3-3 tie.
  • The University of Manitoba Bisons women's hockey team welcomed the Alberta Pandas to the Max Bell Center, and ran into a hot goaltender as Michala Jeffries shut the Bisons down in both games last Friday and Saturday.
  • We spoke a little about the Pledge-O-Rama prizes being offered up by The Hockey Show that you can win if you pledge some money. We're giving away a Buffalo Sabres jacket, opportunities to be the third-man in the booth with us, a chance to have your name as the sponsor of the show, and we ran down some more NHL '94 Tournament info.
  • We played a few Rick Jeanneret clips. La-la-la-la-la-la-LaFontaine!
  • We spoke quickly about Sheldon Kennedy getting his Diamond Jubilee Award.
  • The AHL unveiled its new, sleeker, simpler website.
  • The Brandon Wheat Kings fell into second-place in the WHL's East Division after the Prince Albert Raiders went on a tear to climb the standings.
After all was said and done, we totally forgot to get the podcast up, so I'll be doing some extra work tomorrow to get that going. Stay tuned for Episodes 4 and 5 tomorrow as I'll be heading into the station to get that done. If you missed the show, head over to The Hockey Show's page at the UMFM site, and download any of the available podcasts to get caught up!

Until next time, keep your sticks on the ice!
