I find it hard to fathom how Trevor Gillies can keep a job in hockey. He does nothing but fight, and he usually plays so far over the edge that he's not only a danger to himself, but a danger to others. He doesn't care about scoring and he doesn't play any defence. He's a thug on skates, and he's proven this time and again in rinks all over the world. From his time in the KHL to his stints in the NHL and AHL here in North America, Gillies is an absolute idiot when he plays the game.
Gillies is 35 years-old, and he's played a grand total of 57 NHL games in his career of being a journeyman "enforcer". I use the term "enforcer" loosely because a 57-game NHL career that has seen him play for 22 teams since turning pro in 1999 means that his value is extremely low to a vast number of teams. Nevertheless, he has a job with AHL's Adirondack Flames this season for some reason, although he may see very little ice-time after his latest idiotic move.
With Adirondack trailing the Rochester Americans 5-1 tonight, a skirmish developed in the corner that didn't involve Gillies until Gillies made himself involved. Check out how he finished off his involvement.
Gillies could have done serious damage to William Carrier's head had he not been wearing a helmet. Even with a helmet on, he could have concussed Carrier by slamming his head into the ice. What would possess a player to do something so idiotic?
Suspend him for a long, long time. The AHL is better off without him on the ice. I don't care what he means to the Flames whatsoever. That kind of garbage is dangerous, stupid, and unnecessary entirely. There is no excuse, reason, or rationale that would make that move reasonable in any way, shape, or form.
Trevor Gillies, you're an idiot. You don't deserve the privilege of playing the game professionally with your conduct on the ice. This isn't the first time you've done something stupid, and I'm pretty sure it won't be your last. Get your head checked. That's absolute crap.
Until next time, keep your sticks on the ice!
