The Hockey Show, Canada's only campus-produced hockey radio show, is back on the air tonight at 5:30pm CT as we welcome a guest whose name probably isn't recognizable to most hockey fans in the Winnipeg region, but he certainly will leave an impression on you as a listener. He didn't play in the NHL, but he was drafted twice. He didn't play for the WHA Jets or the NHL Jets, but he did suit up for the Winnipeg Jets. Who is this man? Read on!
Despite that very 1970s hairstyle, that is former WJHL Winnipeg Jet Mike Thompson! Thompson played for the junior-circuit Jets from 1971-73 after suiting up for the MJHL's Winnipeg Monarchs in 1971. He would be drafted by the St. Louis Blues and the WHA's Cleveland Crusaders after playing his 1974 season for the Flin Flon Bombers and Victoria Cougars, and would go on to play for St. Louis' farm team in the IHL, the Columbus Owls! We're going to talk to Mike about growing up in Regina, Saskatchewan, playing hockey in Manitoba, being drafted twice, and some of the memorable people he played with and against in his days as a player. Because he lives in Columbus, Ohio still, we'll also get his take on the Blue Jackets and the NCAA Frozen Four tournament!
The phones will be off tonight as we speak with Mike Thompson, but, as always, we will be live on 101.5 UMFM on your radio dial in the Winnipeg region or you can listen live between 5:30pm and 6:30pm CT on your web-enabled device at the UMFM webpage! You can tweet me anytime you like by hitting me up at @TeebzHBIC on Twitter. You can also post some stuff to Facebook if you use the "Like" feature, and I always have crazy stuff posted there that doesn't make it to the blog or show. Tonight will be a look into the past as former junior Jet Mike Thompson tells us about hockey in the 1970s!
