The Rundown - Week 7

Everyone is back on the ice this week, and there was a chance for a major shake-up in the Canada West Conference with just seven points separating first-place from seventh-place. The OUA was setup for a little up-and-down in the standings depending on outcomes, and the RSEQ and AUS keep plugging along as the CIS women's hockey scene nears the December break. It's time to run down the action from this past week's games!

Canada West Results

REGINA at MOUNT ROYAL: These two teams were looking to climb the standings, so both Cougars teams were looking for wins. Regina opened the scoring when Nikki Watters-Matthes found Jaycee Magwood at the side of the net who deflected the puck past an out-of-position Jess Ross for the goal at 2:03. Mount Royal would respond on the power-play 2:19 later when Sarah Weninger's shot beat Toni Ross for the 1-1 equalizer.

From there, it was mostly Regina as they would score the next four goals. Stephanie Sawchuk at 10:59 and Kylie Gavelin on the power-play at 16:28 of the first period, Alexis Larson at 19:14 of the second period, and Jaycee Magwood with her second of the game at 7:10 of the third period staked the Regina Cougars to the 5-1 lead. The final two goals would be scored on Emma Pincott after Mount Royal pulled Jess Ross midway through the second period. Mount Royal would get one back off the stick of Jordan Finnie at 13:41, but it wasn't enough as Regina wins 5-2. Toni Ross picked up the win while Jess Ross would take the loss.

REGINA at MOUNT ROYAL: Regina looked to put a little space between them and Mount Royal in the standings, but it was Mount Royal who came out firing. Elisha Cunningham at 11:06 and Kate Hufnagel on the power-play at 19:39 staked Mount Royal to the 2-0 lead after one period. They then book-ended the next two periods with goals as Sydney Laurin scored 1:56 into the middle frame to make it 3-0 before Regina broke the goose egg on the power-play at 11:56 when Stephanie Sawchuk found some room past Emma Pincott. However, Rachel Piitz would score at 13:24 to restore the three-goal lead through 40 minutes.

Piitz would add another at 7:34 of the third period. Sawchuk would score her second of the game at 11:54 of the third period to make it 5-2, but Megan Carver would ice the game at 18:35 when she threw the puck into the empty Regina cage for the 6-2 victory. Pincott would pick up the win in this game while Jane Kish was on the losing end for Regina.

CALGARY at ALBERTA: Friday night's game was ugly, so let's get this over with quickly. Regan Wright scored at 11:09 of the first period to put Alberta up 1-0. Amy Helfrich scored at 7:48 to make it 2-0. Natasha Steblin added a power-play marker at 12:40, and Janelle Froehler added a second power-play goal 15 seconds later to make it a 4-0 Alberta lead. Helfrich scored her second of the game 1:32 into the third period, and Ashley Morin added a power-play goal at 4:31 for the 6-0 lead.

Calgary, though, saw Chelsea Court snap Lindsey Post's shutout bid at 6:24 with ehr power-play goal, and Iya Gavrilova made it a 6-2 game with her goal at 9:36. However, Sasha Lutz would score at 15:58 and Autumn MacDougall would add another at 18:58 as the Alberta Pandas skated to the 9-2 rout of the Calgary Dinos. Sarah Murray took the loss despite her and Hayley Dowling each allowing four goals while Lindsey post picked up the win.

ALBERTA at CALGARY: After a thrashing like the Dinos took on Friday in Edmonton, Saturday's game was a test of pride as they returned home to Calgary for the second-half of the home-and-home with their provincial rivals. Sasha Vafina got the Dinos off on the right foot as she found room past Dayna Owen at the 10:21 mark of the first period. Calgary would double the lead at 4:04 of the second period when Chelsea Court dented the Alberta twine. Alberta would get one back on the power-play at 9:22 of the third period off the stick of Regan Wright, but Sarah Murray stood tall on Saturday and helped Calgary to the 2-1 win! Murray stopped 30 of 31 pucks sent her way in the win while Dayna Owen was on the losing side for Alberta.

MANITOBA at LETHBRIDGE: The Pronghorns looked to snap a shutout streak that had been going on for two games after they were shutout by the Mount Royal Cougars in both games before the bye week. Unfortunately, they ran into a Bisons team that has been on the same page for the last few weeks. The Bisons got goals from Kayleigh Wiens at 4:04 of the first period, Charity Price at 7:17 and Courtlyn Oswald at 9:45 of the second period, and Price added another at 15:29 of the third period to give the Bisons the 4-0 victory. Rachel Dyck was perfect in stopping all 26 shots she faced for the shutout and the win while Alicia Anderson took the loss for the Pronghorns.

MANITOBA at LETHBRIDGE: Three straight games of being shutout. Would the Pronghorns break the streak? Alana Serhan's power-play goal at 6:45 of the first period was all the scoring in this one, so the answer would be no to the question above. Amanda Schubert stopped 20 shots for the 1-0 shutout victory while Jessica Lohues was on the losing end despite the strong effort.

As it stands now, the Lethbridge Pronghorns haven't scored a goal in regulation time in 270:43. The last time a Pronghorn scored was Janae Culp at 9:17 of the second period in the October 24 game against the Calgary Dinos! Things won't get any easier for the Pronghorns either as they visit the Regina Cougars next week.

SASKATCHEWAN at UBC: It took five periods to find a goal, but only one goal was recorded on Friday night in BC. Saskatchewan's Hannah McGillvray was whistled for slashing 52 seconds into double-overtime to give UBC the power-play, and the Thunderbirds would capitalize at 2:05 when Mathea Fischer one-timed a blast from the right circle past Cassidy Hendricks for the 1-0 UBC double-overtime victory! The Norwegian-born Fischer's goal was her first CIS marker, and it propelled the UBC Thunderbirds into second-place, one point behind Canada West-leading Saskatchewan. Danielle Dubé stopped all 19 shots she faced in the win while Hendricks made 28 of 29 stops in a losing effort.

SASKATCHEWAN at UBC: UBC had a chance to leap Saskatchewan in the standing with a win on Saturday and take over first-place in the conference. They started well as Haneet Parhar foud the back of the net just 5:27 in for the 1-0 lead. The Huskies would draw even at 14:54 when Marley Ervine scored shorthanded on Samantha Langford for the 1-1 equalizer. The Huskies would go ahead midway through the second period when Lauren Zary found the back of the net at 12:05 to make it 2-1.

However, UBC scored the next three goals as Stephanie Schaupmeyer scored at 12:38, Madison Patrick scored at 18:52, and Kelly Murray added a power-play goal 58 seconds into the third period for the 4-2 lead. Saskatchewan would manage one more goal as Lauren Zary scored her second of the game at 17:10, but UBC would take the game by the 4-3 score. Langford would record the win while Hendricks lost for the second straight night.

YORK at WINDSOR: York cracked the scoreless tie early in the second period when Renata Bastos Gottgtroy beat Windsor's Ingrid Sandven at 2:47. Windsor would pull even at 14:39 when Jillian Rops found room past Megan Lee. Krystin Lawrence put Windsor up 2-1 just 1:11 into the third period, but York would respond at 13:56 when Raeanna Kelly found the back of the net to tie the game at 2-2.

This game would go into overtime, but nothing would be solved. In double-overtime, though, we'd see a winner. With Kelly serving a double-minor for a check to the head, Windsor's Natalie Barrette would score on the power-play to give the Lancers the 3-2 victory. Sandven picked up the victory while Lee recorded the loss.

BROCK at TORONTO: Brock's Brittany Gillmor got this party started at 10:30 when she beat Hailey Farrelly. Toronto would tie things up at 8:25 of the second period with Jacqueline Scheffel's shot that found room past Jensen Murphy. However, Brock would regain the lead late in the period as Sophie Herbert danced in shorthanded and beat Farrelly at 17:40. That would be all the offence in this game as the Brock Badgers snapped Toronto's unbeaten streak in the 2-1 win. Murphy stopped 29 of 30 shots that she faced in the win while Farrelly allowed two goals on just ten shots in the loss.

WATERLOO at RYERSON: This game was almost all Waterloo. Hannah Street opened the scoring at 8:58, and the Warriors would double the lead 54 seconds later on the power-play when Rachel Marriott found the back of the net. Tegan Odland would make it 3-0 for Waterloo just 2:32 into the second period, and it would be 4-0 when Marriott had her second of the game 1:31 after Odland's goal. Siobhan Hewitt-Kenda would make it 5-0 at 12:11 of the third period, but the shutout would be broken with 31 seconds to play when Ryerson's Karli Nummikoski broke the goose egg.

Rebecca Bouwhuis stopped 25 of 26 shots in the 5-1 win while Ally Sarna took the loss after allowing three goals on 12 shots. Alex Armstrong stopped 13 of 15 shots she faced after relieving Sarna in the Ryerson net.

QUEEN'S at UOIT: Queen's controlled this game from the drop of the puck. Michele Knecht scored at 2:40 and Katrina Manoukarakis scored at 5:56 to stake Queen's to the 2-0 lead after one period. Nadia Larocca would make it 3-0 after two periods, and the only question was whether the Panthers could stop the bleeding. Manoukarakis picked up her second of the game on the power-play at 5:51 to make it 4-0 before Mikaeli Cavell broke the shutout with her goal at 12:21. Queen's Kyla Crouse would round out the scoring at 17:40 as the Gaels skated to the 5-1 victory.

Caitlyn Lahonen picked up the victory in a 21-save effort while Tori Campbell stopped 36 of 41 shots on a night where the Ridgebacks' net was under attack from the opening face-off.

NIPISSING at LAURENTIAN: All it takes is one goal a and solid goaltending performance. Laurentian's Emma Leger broke the scoreless draw at 3:55 of the third period as she beat Jacqueline Rochefort, and Laura Deller did the rest in the blue paint for the Voyageurs in the 1-0 victory. Deller stopped all 22 shots for the shutout and win while Rochefort was on the losing side of the ledger.

GUELPH at WINDSOR: This one was ugly. Karli Shell put Guelph up 1-0 5:19 into the game. Kelly Gribbons made it 2-0 just 1:03 into the second period. Marcie Landman made it a 3-0 game 1:18 after Gribbons' goal. Averi Nooren scored shorthanded at 12:29 to make it 4-0 after two periods. Christine Grant scored 30 seconds into the third period, Gribbons added her second of the game at 4:33, and Jessica Pinkerton closed out the scoring at 17:16 as Guelph trounced Windsor by a 7-0 score.

Valerie Lamenta stopped all 24 shots she saw for the shutout and win while Ingrid Sandven took the loss after surrendering five goals on 20 shots. Marissa Kozovski stopped seven of nine shots in relief of Sandven.

WESTERN at BROCK: It took until 8:23 of the second period, but Western's Stacey Scott broke the scoreless game when she beat Jensen Murphy. Britt Loggie would make it a 2-0 game after she scored at 4:36 of the third period, but Brock would get one back when Isabella Triolo beat Kelly Campbell at 8:09 to make it 2-1. Western would restore the two-goal lead at 11:11 with Megan Taylor's goal, and they wouldn't relinquish that lead as they skated to the 3-1 victory. Campbell picks up the win while Murphy takes the loss.

WATERLOO at TORONTO: Toronto's Julia Szulewska opened the scoring at 5:43 as she beat Rebecca Bouwhuis, but Waterloo would answer back at the 8:00 mark when Paula Lagamba found room past Valencia Yordanov for the 1-1 tie after one period. Toronto's Kiyono Cox would put the Varsity Blues up 2-1 at the 2:17 mark of the second period, but Waterloo would square the game up on the power-play at 17:49 of the third period when Kaitlyn McDonell dented twine.

It was off to overtime, and we found a winner just 1:03 in. Lagamba scored her second of the night, and she helped Waterloo down Toronto by a 3-2 overtime score. Bouwhuis picked up the victory while Yordanov was on the losing end of this four-period game.

RYERSON at LAURIER: A shorthanded goal by Laurier's Jessica Prevette 15:37 into the second period was all the scoring recorded in this game as the Golden Hawks downed the Rams by a 1-0 score. Lauren Webber stopped all 28 shots she faced for the shutout and win while Alex Armstrong stopped 22 of 23 shots in a losing effort.

LAURIER at WESTERN: The reigning CIS Champions made short work of the Golden Hawks in this one. The Mustangs got goals from Kendra Broad on the power-play at 2:19 of the first period, Tia Kipfer at 13:08 of the second period, April Clark at 12:40 of the third, Marlowe Pecora at 16:38 of the third, and Stacey Scott at 17:21 of the third period. Kelly Campbell stopped all 26 shots sent her way in the 5-0 shutout victory while Laurier's Lauren Webber took the loss.

MONTREAL at CONCORDIA: Concordia's Kerianne Schofield scored at 4:12 of the first period, and goaltender Katherine Purchase took care of the rest as she stopped all 27 shots she faced in the 1-0 shutout victory. Marie-Pier Chabot stopped 20 of 21 shots she faced in a losing effort.

MCGILL at CARLETON: Carleton's Becky Davidson scored at 15:29 of the second period as the only marks on the goal-scoring side of the scoresheet. Katelyn Steele stopped all 35 shots directed at her in the 1-0 shutout win while Kayla Loberg took the loss in stopping 13 of the 14 shots she faced.

MONTREAL at OTTAWA: This would be the only game in the RSEQ that didn't feature a shutout. Ottawa's Melina Roy would kick things off at 3:25 of the first period when her shot beat Elodie Rousseau Sirois. Montreal would answer back 1:33 later when Casandra Dupuis beat Maude Levesque-Ryan on the power-play. The Carabins would take the lead into the intermission when Laurie Mercier found the back of the net at the 11:24 mark for the 2-1 Montreal advantage.

Roxanne Rioux would tie the game up at 7:41 of the second period, and that 2-2 score would carry into the third period. Laurence Beaulieu would put Montreal up 3-2 just 33 seconds into the period. Catherine Dubois made it 4-2 at the 5:12 mark, and it appeared the Carabins were locking this game down.

Cue the comeback! Violaine Houle scored at 10:34 to make it 4-3, and Melodie Bouchard would score on the power-play to bring the GeeGees even with the Carabins at 4-4. Ottawa would take the lead on Bouchard's second goal of the night at 18:23, and the GeeGees would hold on to win this game by the 5-4 score! Levesque-Ryan would earn the victory while Rousseau Sirois took the loss.

CARLETON at MCGILL: The second-half of the home-and-home saw the home team tally the only markers on the night. McGill's Brittney Fouracres would find some room to bury the puck on the power-play past Katelyn Steele at 8:13 of the second period to put the Martlets up 1-0. Hailey Perreault would take over in the third period for Carelton, and Gabrielle Davidson would welcome her to the game by lighting the lamp behind her at 9:46. That would be all McGill needed on this night as they skated to the 2-0 victory. Taylor Hough had a relatively light night in stopping just 12 shots for the shutout and win while Steele was assigned the loss in this game.

The X-Women would fight back, though, as Sarah Bujold put one past Taylor Cook while on the power-play at 4:47, and they would tie the game at 16:01 off Brooke Noseworthy's tally. Taylor Dale would play the hero on this night as her goal at 16:32 would cap the victory for the X-Women as StFX takes the game 3-2. Daigle earned the win while Cook was assessed the loss.

Marie-Pier Arsenault scored on the power-play at 6:52, Natacha Bergeron scored at 14:14, and Marie-Pier Corriveau scored at 15:30 to stake the Aigles Bleues to the 3-0 lead in the first period. Mount Allison would double its lead at the 4:00 mark of the second period off Emily van Diepen's tally. However, it was all Dalhousie after that. Tara Morning scored at 10:15 to make it 2-1, Becca Chilvers added another at 11:04, and Courtney Sheedy dented twine behind Keri Martin for the 3-2 Dalhousie lead after 40 minutes. As you can see, there has been some movement in each of the standings. Personally, I'd have UBC, Saint Mary's, and Guelph in my top-three right now as they've been battling hard to be at the top or near the top of their respective conferences. Kudos go out to Saint Mary's and Manitoba for some impressive win streaks. And what can be said of Lethbridge's fall from grace in terms of being shutout in four straight games? How about "see you next week!"

Until next time, keep your sticks on the ice!
