Yikes

The Ottawa Senators were visiting the San Jose Sharks tonight, and one would expect some high-paced action between these two teams. Both teams have underperformed to some degree this season, but they're both still in the hunt for a playoff spot. In saying that, one would expect some goal-scoring and some speed, but I don't think anyone expected Mike Hoffman to use that speed to almost sideline him for some time. As seen above, Hoffman skated off the ice under his own power after taking a pretty incredible scare.

Hoffman, who leads the Senators with 20 goals this season, was flying down the ice midway through the second period when he got bumped by Justin Braun. While Hoffman does his best to try to avoid goaltender Alex Stalock, it's this avoidance that causes Hoffman to meet the goalpost in a rather brutal fashion.
Ouch. Hoffman appeared to be alright despite the collision, but we'll see what the tests determine tomorrow. The last thing the Ottawa Senators need is an injury to their leading goal scorer, but if this is a collarbone injury or a shoulder issue Hoffman could be out for an extended period of time. I'm just thankful he got his face and head out of the way of the post.

The Senators did win tonight despite losing Hoffman as they pulled out a 4-3 shootout victory over the Sharks. It keeps them in contention for a playoff spot, but you wonder if they'll fade down the stretch without one of their big guns in the lineup. For the sake of the Senators, let's hope that Hoffman's injury isn't serious and he can return to the ice soon!

Until next time, keep your sticks on the ice!
