I'll be honest in saying that I have very little knowledge about the USHL simply because I never get to see the games. I try to read up on players and interesting stories from the USHL, but I admit there are still large gaps when it comes to what's happening in junior hockey in the United States. However, when a great goal is scored, everyone seems to talk about it. The USHL might have seen one of the greatest goals scored this year, and it's only February.
The Omaha Lancers and the Tri-City Storm are at the bottom of the Western Conference standings this season, so there's been little to cheer about for either team's fanbase. They both sit more than ten points away from the pack who are competing for playoff spots, so there hasn't been much joy in Joyville. However, there was a major bright spot on Friday night as Linus Weissbach went off for Tri-City's first goal of the evening against Omaha.
Wow. The dangle around Zak Galambos was nice enough that it could be considered for the goal of the year honours, but the stick-handling in tight against Tommy Nappier to deke around him just adds to the amazing play. Linus Weissbach's 15th goal of the season was, in every sense of the word, a beauty. The 18 year-old Swedish prospect is draft-eligible, so I'm guessing there were a few scouts scribbling in their notebooks after that sequence.
Unfortunately, the Storm coughed up a two-goal lead and lost in overtime to the Lancers by a 3-2 score. That might be why they're at the bottom of the Western Conference standings. Regardless of where they are or where they finish, the Storm have a pretty special player in Linus Weissbach!
Until next time, keep your sticks on the ice!
