Monday's Chuckle

Back in 1997, there was a McDonald's commercial that pitted Wayne Gretzky against Mats Sundin in a winner-buys-lunch competition on the ice. Like the old Michael Jordan-Larry Bird commercials where "nothing but net" was born, this commercial featured the two superstars doing all sorts of trick shots where the player who didn't make said shot bought lunch. There's some rather ridiculous "shots" made in the commercial, but it seems that two of the closest teammates on the Pittsburgh Penguins are following in Gretzky's and Sundin's footsteps, albeit with less bounces off things inside PPG Paints Arena.

Ladies and gentlemen, I give to you Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin competing in "Extreme Puck Shooting".
Look, I get that he's a shy guy around the media, but how many people knew just how good Evgeni Malkin's chirps are? After he scored his third goal and he says, "Where's hats?", I couldn't help but laugh. And his "Are you kidding me?!? Move the net!" after hitting the post in the second-half of the challenge seemed to crack everyone up. Malkin is a natural comedian.

Personally, I'd like to see more of these fun videos from NHL teams where the personalities of the players really shine through. Far too often, we're subjected to canned answers and catchprhases, so seeing videos like this one produced by the Penguins gives you better insight on these players.

Do more of these, please. It's good for the game.

Until next time, keep your sticks on the ice!
