A Void In The Universe

In today's media age, everyone has a camera and anyone can make video. It doesn't matter what social media site you're on, there's a video of almost anything that one wants to find. I mention this because it struck me as bewildering when there were no highlight videos made for both the U Cup Men's Hockey Championship and the U SPORTS National Women's Hockey Championship. You would think that U SPORTS, who has sold the broadcast rights to CBC for both events, would want to have highlight reels of all the games at their biggest hockey tournaments of the year, but I guess I think differently because there are none to be found on both the U SPORTS and CBC Sports YouTube accounts. Why are there no highlights?

I had full plans to sit down and produce Headline Sports-style highlights for each of the four games of the U SPORTS ational Women's Hockey Championship quarterfinal games, but there are none to be found anywhere. As such, I am not spending my entire night cutting up video and looking for highlights when U SPORTS is already doing this for their social media accounts. The fact that they missed posting a number of goals from the Concordia-StFX game doesn't help, but it doesn't seem to matter when it comes to giving the women the proper resepct that they've earned.

I'm not really looking forward to doing scoring recaps for eight games on Saturday, but I guess that's what I'll do since the most basic part of having hockey on a video stream isn't being done. I want to give these women a bigger stage than what they currently get, but I'm one person. I don't have a media team nor am I being paid to clip video, so I struggle to understand why the powers-that-be that oversee these leagues can't get their acts together when it comes to giving these players some spotlight. This matters more than they think.

And I want to be clear: this isn't a gender issue. The men's tournament has no highlights made for their games either despite those games having some incredible finishes. Again, no highlights of any of this, so what exactly is U SPORTS doing to promote its athletes? If you want to be proud of where they go next whether it be the ECHL or Europe and beyond, help them achieve that!

Tomorrow, I'll do the scoring summaries for the games played On Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. Eight games will be recapped from the U SPORTS National Women's Hockey Championship, but they won't be as fun as the highlight recaps I was doing for the Canada West playoffs. I find myself baffled by the people who are supposed to be promoting this game, but that seems to the biggest story in Canadian university hockey. I'll let Bob and Bob from Office Space close this one out as their question seems very relevant considering everything.

Until next time, keep your sticks on the ice!
