Dropping The Ball
The Carolina Hurricanes needed a win - regulation, overtime, shootout, whatever - to earn a date with the Washington Capitals in the opening round of the 2011 NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs. All they needed to do was to knock off a division rival in the Tampa Bay Lightning in their final game of the season. Tampa Bay, seeded fifth in the Eastern Conference, wasn't going to just let Carolina take two points from them, but Carolina had one goal: WIN.
At the end of the night, the Carolina Hurricanes watched the final seconds of their season tick off the clock as they fell to the Tampa Bay Lightning by a 6-2 score. With that, there's only one thing left for the Hurricanes to do this season:
Clean out the lockers, gents. We'll see you next year!
The New York Rangers will play the Washington Capitals as the eighth-seed in the Eastern Conference thanks to the Hurricanes dropping the ball in their last game. If you're a Hurricanes fan, who are you cheering for in this year's playoffs?
Until next time, keep your sticks on the ice!

I'm a 'Canes fan who is disappointed, but not all too surprised they didn't pull it off against Tampa. We went through this same deal in 2008: just win the last game against FLA and make the playoffs. Needless to say, they didn't win!
I will be rooting for my next two favorite teams, the Lightning and the Ducks, this postseason. It should be an exciting playoffs... it's just too bad no one will be playing at the loudest house in the NHL, the rockin' RBC Center!
