Back To The Future

With the return of Peter Forsberg and Adam Foote to their old stomping grounds, and with Teemu Selanne putting off retirement for another spin with the Ducks, the Western Conference is starting to feel like the late 1990s again. I'm just waiting for a team to announce the signing of the speedy Marty McFly and it'll feel like a dream sequence in the NHL. However, Detroit is now onboard the DeLorean as they recalled veteran checking forward Darren McCarty this weekend from the AHL's Grand Rapids Griffins.

McCarty's story has been well-documented in the media about his addictions to gambling and alcohol, but that's not what makes this so imspiring. The fact that he defeated his demons and is part of the Detroit Red Wings again after falling from grace so quickly shows his mettle and courage.

Of course, McCarty's battle back started in Flint, Michigan with the CHL's Flint Generals.

A quick piece on McCarty's impact in Flint.

From there, McCarty was signed by the AHL's Grand Rapids Griffins. He promptly went out and scored a hat trick for his new team.

This song is cheesy, but good on big Darren.

Now that he's back in the Big Show, here are a few memorable McCarty highlights from his time in the NHL the first time.

A great Versus commercial featuring a great McCarty goal.

McCarty scores for Calgary in overtime in the playoffs.

McCarty vs. Barnaby.

Welcome back, Darren McCarty. It's good to have you back.

Until next time, keep your sticks on the ice!
