The Hockey Show - Episode 147

The Hockey Show, Canada's only campus-produced hockey radio show, is back tonight to anger and possibly infuriate the people of Edmonton and Toronto. While we normally don't try to have other cities set their sights on hating us, there needs to a candid and frank discussion on these development camps that are happening right now, and we'll look at the media craze happening in Edmonton surrounding Connor McDavid, and Beans and I will have a conversation that legitimately needs to happen at this point in the summer.

I wrote about this last week, but this insanity surrounding Connor McDavid has to stop. There are reasons why Edmonton should be excited, but let's be honest in that McDavid isn't Wayne Gretzky and this isn't the NHL of the 1980s where teams averaged about twelve goals per game. Yes, he's uber-talented and has the ability to crush players of his own age group, but the NHL has frequently chewed up and spit out "generational talent" if one wishes to use labels. We'll discuss why the excitement in Edmonton is either valid or a sign of insanity, and why the expectations heaped upon McDavid are reasonable or idiotic.

We'll also wade into the reaction from Toronto over the Phil Kessel deal as it seems that Phil Kessel's negativity may have been a product of the environment in which he found himself. Toronto media has been nothing but insulting since the trade to Pittsburgh was announced, and we'll talk about the dog-eat-dog media that seems to exist in a few Canadian markets.
