An Important Day
It's Mother's Day in North America, and that means we should all be spending a little time with Mom today. Whether you opt to visit Mom, call Mom on the phone, honour Mom's memory if she's passed, or celebrate a Mom you know, make the time today for Mom. We all have one, some may have two, and others may have more, but there are enough Moms on this planet that you should be able to find one and honour her today for the efforts she made and the sacrifices she made as a mother.
With all the craziness happening in the world right now, specifically in the USA where women's health and reproductive rights are being threatened by people who seem to have been spawned from the depths of Hell, there are a lot of Moms and women who chose not to be Moms who deserve a hug today. Maybe even NEED a hug. The ultimate commitment one makes in this life is raising a child to be good and smart and caring, and one needs to be ready to accept that commitment. There are a lot of reasons why someone may not be ready, but those who made the best decision for themselves, their health, and the potential health of a baby regardless of whether they tackled that commitment or not deserve a hug today. If it can't be a hug, a phone call will certainly suffice. If you can't call, find a way to honour those who commit to making the world better.
Countries around the world celebrate Mother's Day or a form of Mother's Day throughout the calendar. Norway, for example, celebrates on the second Sunday in February, the British and Irish celebrate on the fourth Sunday in Lent, Mexico honours their madres on May 10, and Luxembourg celebrates on the second Sunday in June. Celebrating and honour Moms happens all over the planet at all different times of the year, but the common thread is that everyone honours Moms in their own way. You should do the same today if you're in Canada or the US.
I saw my Mom yesterday as she was painting with me. Mom has always loved the spring in terms of the garden starting anew with flowers and growth, and a coat of paint on a room is like a brand-new start for that room according to her. Having spent the say with her, I know I'm a lucky guy to still have her around and have her paint alongside me... even if she can't reach the ceiling without a stepladder. At the end of the day, I feel pretty blessed to have those moments of droplets of paint on the floor, a smudge on the wall from losing one's balance, and the laughs each of those moments bring as I spend the day with my Mom.
I'll call Mom today just to make good on my commitment to honour her for all the sacrifices she made, all the life lessons she taught me, all the skills she passed on, and all the "told you so" moments after I thought I was smarter than she. Moms are special, and they absolutely deserve days throughout the year to be honoured around the world!
Be Canadian and American today - honour your Mom, a Mom, all Moms, and any Mom. After that, be British and honour Moms again. Be Mexican and honour Moms in May. Do it again in June as a Luxembourger. No matter who you are or what your ethnicity is, honour your Mom. Often. Repeatedly.
