The Hockey Show - Episode 168

The Hockey Show, Canada's only campus-produced hockey radio show, returns tonight with a show about a number of things. Tonight's show is going to be full of debate and chatter as we talk about the topic du jour! We'll have some Jets and Moose chatter, some Bisons chatter, and some NHL chatter. I'll even introduce a non-hockey topic to segue into a hockey topic! I know - we're getting fancy on this program!

There will much chatter and evil laughter as we discuss the Jets who absolutely demolished the Leafs last night. We'll talk about Garret Sparks and how quickly things can change both in a game and a career as he's actually fought his way back from long odds to make these last two NHL starts. We'll chat about the Moose who own a 5-12-1-1 record after the Chicago Wolves slaughtered them last night in Chicago. We'll talk about the Manitoba Bisons women's team as some advanced stats compiled by me show some interesting trends and where the Bisons may need to tighten up in the new year.

We'll also talk about the Beaulieu-Foligno fight and concussion protocol in the NHL. We'll chat about John Scott's potential All-Star Game nomination. We'll discuss the World Junior Championship in 2018 with the potential for an outdoor game, and our feelings towards outdoor games in general. And because it dominated the sports chatter this week, we'll talk about MLB pitcher David Price getting $31 million per year for seven years and why athlete salaries are out of control.

There are a couple of promotions you want to get in on as well. Friend of the show and skeleton racer Cassie Hawrysh will be in town on Saturday for TEDxKildonan, an event that aims to inspire Winnipeggers with ideas and create an all around better city. If you want to attend, it's $30 for registration. It's a fun day of idea-sharing and collaborating between people who truly care about the city. Go see Cassie and hear her message on Saturday, December 5!

The Hockey Show and UMFM are collecting socks for Siloam Mission to ensure that Winnipeggers have warm feet this winter! Bring your gently-used or new socks down to UMFM during regular business hours and toss them in the sock bin that we'll turn over to Siloam Mission on December 24th! Alternatively, you can call of text Megan at (204) 782-7677 and she'll come and pick up your stocking donation! As an update, Megan absolutely shattered her goal of 1000 pairs of socks by amassing over 2900 pairs so far, and we haven't even turned the small collection at UMFM over to her yet! Help out The Hockey Show and UMFM by tossing a pair of socks or two into the bin and keep all Winnipeggers warm this winter!

Finally, the Manitoba Moose are holding their Teedy Bear Toss night on December 12 in support of the Christmas Cheer Board. Bring a new or gently-used stuffed toy down to MTS Centre for the game against the Milwaukee Admirals, and give it a toss onto the ice when prompted in the first intermission! All toys collected will be donated to the Christmas Cheer Board to help those in need this holiday season. If you forget to bring a bear, that's ok too as you can purchase one from Build-a-Bear who will have stuffed toys available on the concourse while supplies last. All proceeds from Build-a-Bear sales at the game will be donated to the Christmas Cheer Board as well! Get your tickets for this game on the Manitoba Moose website, and let's help the Christmas Cheer Board bring smiles to number of faces this year! If you have questions, give Jessica Rosenbaum a call via the link above. Tell her The Hockey Show sent you to her!

The phones are wide-open once again tonight, so call in and chat some hockey with us! Make sure you tune your radio dial in the Winnipeg region to 101.5 on your FM dial or listen live between 5:30pm and 6:30pm CT on your web-enabled device at the UMFM webpage as well!
