Swedish Scoring Update
It's been a few weeks since I've updated everyone on the two former Bisons who are playing in the SDHL this season. Alexandra Anderson is currently patrolling the blue line for HC SDE while Erica Rieder has a spot with MODO in the Swedish league, and both are trying to help their teams make the playoffs. As it stands, SDE is sitting with a 4-4-0-1 record for sixth-place in the league and tied with Lulea while MODO is 3-5-0-1 for eighth-place in the league. Both teams are currently in a playoff spot so things are going to plan thus far, but there is definite room for improvement for both clubs as they look to improve their standings and possibly claim home-ice advantage.
Anderson, pictured above with SDE, has the points lead between the two former Bisons as she has a goal and two assists in the nine games that SDE has played thus far. The goal that Anderson scored on September 27? It was pretty nice! Jump ahead to the 1:01 mark to see Alex score!
That goal made it 3-0 over AIK in a game where SDE would end up winning 4-3. The goaltender that Anderson deked and scored on? None other than former Finnish national netminder and former NWHL goalie Meeri Räisänen! That's not a bad goaltender to victimize for your first professional goal!
Erica Rieder is second in points between the two women as she has just one point, but that point is a goal in the nine games that MODO has played. Just as she did at the University of Manitoba, she jumped up into the play and finished off a great pass from former University of Montreal Carabins forward and current French national team player Marion Allemoz!
What makes these two goals special is that Rieder's goal came against AIK on September 22 against none other than former Finnish national netminder and former NWHL goalie Meeri Räisänen as well! How crazy is it that both Rieder and Anderson would score on the same former Olympian for their first professional goals? The only downside is that AIK scored their second goal while Erica was in the penalty box for hooking, and they would eventually win this game by a 3-2 score. To me, though, it's still pretty amazing to see Rieder finish off that play past Räisänen!
In doing a little digging for both these goals, I also came across a video from August 10 where MODO put on a bit of a skills competition where players from both the MODO men's team and MODO women's team did a little accuracy shooting. Of course, Erica was entered into the event, and here's how she did in blowing up the targets in the corners of the net. Jump ahead to the 3:50 mark to see Erica take aim at those targets!
Ok, no one ever said she was Ray Bourque when it came to the shooting accuracy, but three out of four isn't bad as a rookie in her first professional year! Well done, Erica!
There's a quick update on the two former Bisons who went pro over in Sweden this year. It seems both Alexandra and Erica are doing well based upon the results shown on the ice. Both have their professional goals against a big-name goaltender, and that's something they'll never forget!
Until next time, keep your sticks on the ice!
