Early Assist Of The Year Candidate?

There are times that famous actors appear in movies in uncredited roles. They have their own reasons for doing this most times, but it's funny to see these actors and actresses helping their fellow thespians with a cameo. For example, Daniel Craig was the Stormtrooper in The Force Awakens standing guard over Rey who she eventually convinces to let her go by use The Force. You won't see many actors getting Hollywood Stars for their uncredited roles, but we need to give Josh Morrissey a little credit for his uncredited assist that he had today on Mason Appleton's goal against Florida.

With the Jets leading 4-2 and killing a penalty, Adam Lowry forces a turnover before losing his stick, but he keeps the puck moving up the ice and gets a little help from defender Josh Morrissey on the bench!

If you caught the replay, Josh Morrissey recognized that Lowry had no stick and offered his to the captain. Lowry grabbed it, continued down the ice, and set up Mason Appleton for the shorthanded goal to put Winnipeg up 5-2 en route to a 6-4 victory!

Morrissey doesn't get credit for an assist on that play, of course, but there needs to be some sort of recognition for Morrissey's awareness on that play. There is simply no way this goal happens if Morrissey doesn't offer his stick to Lowry as it allowed Appleton to fade back into the middle of the ice as opposed to trying to help Lowry get the puck down the ice.

At the time, no one knew that Appleton's shorthanded goal would stand to be the game-winner, but it made that uncredited assist by Morrissey all the more important as Appleton's tally stood as game-winning goal. With the victory, the Jets earned the home-opening win, and the fans went home happy and, possibly, thrilled at seeing one of the best assists thus far in the NHL and, perhaps, one of the best they'll see all season.

Morrissey's assist won't appear on the scoresheet, but what say you, readers: does Morrissey handing Lowry his stick count as a potential assist of the year? Sound off in the comments if you like!

Until next time, keep your sticks on the ice!
